happy 4th birthday, bella!
Bella's fourth birthday was on March 19th. To celebrate we normally would go to Carmel for a weekend around that time. We always eat at Portabella, walk around downtown, get Bella a toy at Diggity Dog, let her swim at the beach, and [of course] celebrate with lots of decorations and cake. We had our annual Bella's Birthday trip planned but canceled it last minute due to the shelter-in-place order. It is one of the best weekends of the year for us, but we decided it was better to be cautious than not. We are really bummed out that we could not go this year- just bad timing. Hopefully, we can reschedule the trip once everything settles down.
Poor little Bella. She did not understand what happened to all of her birthday festivities this year. So, today we celebrated her birthday at home. I made her usual peanut butter dog cake and we put up all the decorations for her unicorn-themed birthday party. She got a lot of new toys that she was excited to play with right away. I am sure she would rather be in Carmel, but we made the best out of the situation. A few unicorn guests showed up to her party. She was okay with them sharing her birthday festivities because they did not ask for any of her cake.
In case there are any other dog moms out there wondering, I use a Puppy Cake Mix. I got a silicone dog bone cake mold years ago for her first birthday. So, every year, it is a tradition to make her the same dog bone-shaped, 2-layer cake. The cake mix comes with a packet of frosting to make- just add water. Sometimes I make my own frosting out of peanut butter and Greek yogurt. This year, I just wanted to work with what I had. So, I made the frosting as instructed by the box, added a little extra water and mixed in a spoonful of peanut butter. She seemed to really enjoy it. This puppy cake mix never fails. I always look into making one from scratch or trying another mix, but this one really gets the best reviews for a reason. I am pretty positive she looks forward to the cake more than anything else.
The toys we got her were from a "fairytale" collection by Zippy Paws. We got most of them from the collection that fit the theme of her birthday: unicorn, rainbow, cupcake, and unicorns in rainbow. They are so cute and fun. She loves them all!
I would say her birthday party was still a success despite having it at home this year. We may even keep the decorations up for the rest of the week. Ryan's birthday is coming up in a couple weeks, so maybe we should just reuse it all. He doesn't know it yet, but he also wants a unicorn-themed birthday and a dog bone-shaped cake. Just kidding...
Happy 4th Birthday, Bella! We love you so much! xo
